Form of rugs
oriental rugs
Form is the shape of things. It is an area defined by lines. All forms can be traced either to the straight line or to the circle. Straight lines are orderly, stable, static, substantial and strong.
Curved lines are graceful, softening, frivolous, free and flowing, and in composition have a complexity which straight lines do not have.
Certain styles of architecture and decoration have forms predominantly based on the straight line. These have simplicity and strength. In others the curved line is predominant. These are graceful, gay and often elaborate.
Curves are more universal in floorcovering, upholstery and drapery designs than in furniture, because pattern is ornamental rather than utilitarian. But decorative forms in fabrics, too, vary
widely.
